Dad (Dave Dootson) with our championship winning kawasaki AR 50cc.

This year has been a massive learning curve. Making the transition from 50cc to 125gp. The 125 is just so easy to ride, it’s fast and has very good acceleration, especially at Three Sisters where the bike is geared for pure acceleration. And it just handles like a dream; it’s so light and therefore so easy to change direction quickly. I really do enjoy riding it. At the start of the season I loved every second spent on the bike and still do now, however my pace wasn’t great, but still I was beating riders with a lot more experience than me. The start of the season was really motivating because every race I was learning so much and my lap times just kept falling and falling.

After a few meetings I was really becoming confident on the bike, and really started to feel it, and as a result I was riding at a faster pace. Some issues we had with the reliability of the bike had now been eradicated, thanks to my master mechanic (my Dad!). My lap times had gone from a 1min 1 second, to a 1min dead. Riding the bike became more and more fun, as I improved dramatically each time.

I was now confident with the bike moving around underneath me, under heavy braking and acceleration,  and having the right technique to pass people without being dangerous and wasting anytime being stuck behind them.Just short of the half way mark in my first ever season on the 125 I was consistently mixing it up with the boys at the front. That was the point that I realized that I was improving at a good rate, and that I just needed to trust the bike and myself just a fraction more. This would enable me to put some pressure on the front runners.

Sister Tara and Me at Mallory park family day out.

When the podium positions were just short of my grasp my dad decided to change some things on the bike which would help me with my confidence and the performance of the bike. I now do a 58.219 second lap at Three Sisters. All the work carried out on my bike is done by my dad and this is miles better than paying some mechanic I don’t know or trust, any problem with the bike my dad sorts it, and that is just the way I like it. After these changes I had a lot more control of the bike and a feeling of grip. These changes in bike settings helped me with my starts a great deal! Since the changes, I have never been passed on the start, and can start from the back of the grid and can be up to 4th in a lap, if not sooner. My improved fitness helped significantly with my riding, as I never get tired even after 6 races in 1 day.

Me and my dad are a solid team, and are making massive progress. The facts speak for themselves, I did one year on my 50cc and won the Tonfanau championship, we then wanted a class which was more competitive, and so moved up to the 125GP class at Three Sisters. By the end of the year I was having all podium finishes. So the future looks bright. Even more so when all the riders I am battling with have more track experience than me and have bikes that have 14 years on mine, mine being made in 1992 and their bikes being made around 2006 plus having various modifications to them.

I am a realist and a down to earth person and I truly believe with the right help and backing I can make something of my passion for motorcycle racing. Me and my dad have the same mentality, and believe if you’re going to do something you do it proper and with all your heart and soul, or you don’t do it at all.
